Lisbon Shopping Guide: Bookstores

Let’s go on a book hunt,

Lisbon style!

Books are not dead, that’s our statement.

Lisbon is filled up with independent stores offering good selections of books and magazines. If you’re a sucker for books and magazines like us, here you can find our teams’ go-to places where we head for new stuff to bring home and read.

Under the Cover - São Sebastião

We are huge fans of this contemporary bookshop and for a very good reason. Under the Cover has plenty of carefully curated independent magazines and books, and is located right next to the Gulbenkian garden.

The reading materials cover all kinds of topics from art and architecture to food and fashion. A dream for every modern reader.

Open Monday - Friday 11:00-19:00, Saturday 12:00-18:00.

Ler Devagar - Alcântara

One of the most beautiful bookstores in Lisbon, Ler Devagar, can be found at Lx Factory. The shop is built inside an old printing factory and has an atmospheric cafe where you can enjoy a cup of coffee while listening to some of the vinyl records they’re also selling.

Ler Devagar is known for its great selection of both Portuguese and international books, which explains why it’s such a popular spot for locals and foreigners.

Open Monday-Wednesday 10:00-22:00, Thursday-Saturday 10:00-Midnight, Sunday 10:00-21:00.

Livraria da Travessa - Príncipe Real

This bookshop, based in Príncipe Real, offers all kinds of books for all kinds of tastes, both in English and Portuguese. They also have a large selection of audiobooks and DVDs.

The cosy and friendly atmosphere keeps us going back time after time.

Open Monday-Saturday 10:00-22:00, Sunday 11:00-20:00.

Photo Book Corner - São Sebastião

Another gem in São Sebastião, Photo Book Corner is a bookshop specialising in contemporary photography books and monographs. They support independent publishing and therefore avoid stocking reading materials from major publishing houses. All of the carefully selected items are meant to inspire, engage and surprise as works of art.

This airy space is home to a beautiful collection of rare finds.

Open Monday-Friday 11:00-17:00.

Hello, Kristof - Santos

Specialty coffee, brunch, pastries, magazines - what else could you ask for? Now, this one is not a bookstore, but a cosy cafe filled up with cool independent magazines. A great thing is that you can either browse through the many magazines in the cafe, while enjoying your treat of choice, or take your favourites home forever.

Hello, Kristof is located in Santos, which is also home to many little boutiques. The perfect place to spend the weekend, if you ask us.

Open Monday-Sunday 9:00-16:00.

It’s a Book - Anjos

It’s a Book is an adorable little bookshop that can be found in Anjos. The shop specialises in artwork and kids’ books, and thanks to the large selection of books you can find something for kids with all kinds of interests and passions.

Visit together with your little ones and let them choose what you’ll be reading tonight.

Open Tuesday-Friday 13:00-19:00, Saturday 10:00-17:00.

Livraria Bertrand - Chiado

The oldest operating bookshop in the world, Livraria Bertrand, is located right in the centre of Lisbon and offers a wide selection of books.

The beautiful blue-tiled building is a sight as it is, but stepping in and losing yourself in the labyrinth of books is the real adventure. After some shopping, you can sit down at their cosy cafe with your new book.

Open Monday-Sunday 9:00-22:00.
