LISBON: Food & Drinks Guide

LISBON: Food & Drinks Guide

The best places

to eat & drink in Lisbon

Lisbon is the city of light and the city of good food. It’s hard to choose and sometimes hard to find, the perfect place that has truly homemade dishes. In this guide, you will find our favorite finds. The places we go to from time to time, with as much adoration as we felt on our first visit.

Oficio, Bairro Alto

Oficio is a place that carries the same charm as an old Portuguese Tasca that has yet to be discovered. The restaurant has a strong focus on Portuguese food with a twist, a tasca atipica so to speak.

  • The food is a departure from the typical Tasca;

  • In the interior, you will find a six-seat counter, inside a five-room hotel, with sandpaper walls, large arches in the middle of the room connecting to the ceiling, astel blue chairs, dark red wall couches to contrast, and stone tables;

  • It’s not a Michelin restaurant but we don’t know where Michelin is because these are not any ordinary dishes you can eat somewhere else, it’s an incredible tasting experience.

Lulu, um pub bonito, Santos

Our favorite pink bar, Lulu um Pub Bonito is doing things a little differently, think about the best design pub you have ever seen, with the cocktail menu to fall back on. At Lulu what will not lack is a good atmosphere and pure relaxation.

  • The inspiration comes from the actress Louise Brookes (lulu) and the crazy 20s, with signature cocktails that are named after women like Jane Fonda or Cindy Lauper and national singers like Ágata and Lena d’água;

  • Includes a DJ area and after 11 pm it’s the place to party;

  • Amazing cocktails for only 7/9€, and good food to share.

Do we truly need to say more?

O pif, Anjos

Adélade Biret has designed a tiny Portuguese wine bar with a spectacular charm. When you go in, you'll be greeted by pink hues and a calm, quiet ambiance. The French entrepreneur wanted to bring a little of her homeland to the bar, so she built benches near to the window where people could socialize while watching the world go by.

  • Wine bar from only small Portuguese producers to fill your glass or to take the bottle home;

  • The interior design is the exterior of wine, floor tiles that have 3 tones of color, a soft red, a light pink, and terracotta (red wine, rose, and white wine);

  • They have a specialist in the house to help you if you are not sure what wine to get;

  • The service goes beyond, on Tuesdays they have customary Oyster Point.

PRADO, Chiado

Set against the backdrop of Lisbon's iconic cathedral, The PRADO restaurant was opened in 2017 by António Galapito, intending to bring farm-to-table dishes.

  • The menu is diverse and allows us to try dishes such as "peixe galo, lobster emulsion, and sado rice";

  • They have a variety of Portuguese wines;

  • Built inside an old factory, the restaurant has a neutral aesthetic wrapped in a harmony of plants;

  • The wood-fired barbecue will instantly immerse you in the charm of the Portuguese countryside and enchant you to try some barbecued dishes;

  • Book in advance as it is always full.

An exceptional culinary experience for a very affordable price.

Coyo Taco, Cais do Sodré or Principe Real

First opened in Principe Real and then in Cais do Sodre, Coyo Taco was born in 2018 to bring the true Mexican flavors to Lisbon from tacos to churros.

  • Homemade tacos throughout the day with nixtamal coming directly from Mexico;

  • Garnished with seasonal and national Portuguese products;

  • The space is surrounded by wood and ample tables;

  • Stunning interior, the bottle wall display is an invitation to enter.

Open every day from 12:00 to 00:00 so you can come for a late-night meal and stay for TEQUILA.

ALMA, Chiado

Alma is a must-visit. The focus of this Lisbon restaurant is recognisably soulful cooking, with two Michelin stars, this restaurant promises to blow the palate for even the most skeptical of fine dining.

  • This restaurant is fine dining, i.e. signature cuisine;

  • It’s a restaurant with two Michelin stars;

  • The menu is diverse and allows us to try dishes such as "cobblestreet" salted cod, onion purée, and egg yolk;

  • Has a sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere with a neutral environment.

Some must say true cuisine is a work of art, where each bite takes us to your deepest memories, and throughout this journey, we were delighted.

Bairro do Avillez, Chiado

Jose Avillez created a neighborhood that promises to have mouth-watering food, with spacious and delicious areas where you can eat different foods for different tastes.

Taberna

  • If you are more of a light snack afternoon person, this is the place to go;

  • Our suggestions include cheese and charcuterie by Manteigaria Silva, tuna steak sandwich with vinegary vegetables, Iberian pork steak, and, for dessert, salted caramel.

Páteo

  • Here the meals are meant to be shared, as the good Portuguese tradition dictates;

  • The fish dishes are the most popular such as cod loin with cornbread or tempura cod with tomato rice;

  • For meat lovers, we recommend the sirloin steak and the beef tartare;

  • For dessert, the pavlova is a must.

JAVA rooftop, Cais do sodré

Perched above the city of Lisbon and on the top floor of the panoramic lift is Java, the perfect rooftop to settle in with a drink in your hand while the sun sets and unravels the mystical Lisbon light.

  • The space has a tropical yet serene decor, with lots of plants, Parisian tables, glass lamps, and lights that create the atmosphere;

  • They have a restaurant that is open every day from 18:00 to 01:00, and on weekends they open for a nice brunch.

  • They have a variety of drinks, from wine to beers and cocktails.

Cervejeiria Sem Vergonha, Estrela

Francisco Nobre opened a beer garden and seafood restaurant with chef Carlos Carneiro who is in charge of the kitchen to create a beautiful full menu.

  • The shellfish comes from the Guincho fish farms, and the fish comes from the Ribeira Market;

  • On the menu, you have cold starters like oysters or tuna tartare but also hot starters like prawns al ajillo, fried cuttlefish, and countless shellfish dishes;

  • You have a variety of fish but also meat on the menu;

  • They have an outside area with a swimming pool.

An extra point: the parking on the ground floor with 50% discount on weekdays at lunchtime and after 7 pm, and free at weekends.

Funky Chunky Cookies, Campo de Ourique

It's true, chocolate chip cookies are one of the tastiest food topics in history and there's one thing we can all agree on - there's nothing that quite hits the spot like a good cookie. That's why we've included funky chunky.

  • The ingredients are quality ingredients;

  • The cookies are crispy on the outside, soft inside, and with lots and lots of filling.

  • For extra comfort moments, what could be more comforting than taking a tray of these goodies out of the oven? Yup! (These cookies are also sold frozen.)

No matter your biscuit eating preference, funky chunky has you covered.
