In the heart of Lisbon, where tradition meets innovation and creativity knows no bounds, emerges a celebration of design like no other. Julie de Halleux, a visionary with roots in Belgium and a passion for craftsmanship, brings forth a journey that intertwines art, business, and the essence of Lisbon itself.

Lisbon By Design’s goal, is to elevate Portuguese artists and artisans while fostering new initiatives in arts and craft throughout Portugal. The event will be available to the public at Palacete Gomes Freire on the 22-26 May 2024.

The event showcases a diverse array of talents, from emerging to established, across various mediums such as ceramics, furniture, textiles, metal, glass, and lighting.

This year's focus is on collaboration, fostering connections among artists to create unique pieces. Notable collaborations include Carlos Manuel Gonçalves and Maria Pratas, Vasco Barracão, Martinho Pita, and Hum Gallery, among others.

Visitors can expect immersive installations where traditional techniques meet contemporary style and also exciting collaborations showcasing textiles, straw, and ceramics, paying homage to Portuguese craftsmanship. These installations invite exploration of rich cultural heritage through modern design.

The exhibition also commemorates milestones like the 175th anniversary of Viúva Lamego, as well as an Art Prize, sponsored by Morgado do Quintão, to support emerging artists and foster creative synergies in the community.

We were lucky enough to catch up with Julie de Halleux, the creator of Lisbon by Design, and pick her brains about the inception, inspiration and memorable moments in this exclusive interview.

With Julie de Halleux, founder of Lisbon by Design

What inspired you to launch LISBON by DESIGN, and how has the event evolved since its inception?

I was drawn to the launch of LISBON by DESIGN by the diverse and rich landscape of Portuguese craftsmanship, which remains authentic and deeply rooted in Portuguese traditions. I noticed that many of these talented artisans were dispersed and lacked visibility, making it challenging for enthusiasts to discover their work. To address this, I envisioned creating a platform that not only showcases their talents but also elevates their creations to an international audience.

I encouraged artisans to produce unique and large-scale pieces, pushing the boundaries of their craft. Additionally, I emphasised the importance of presenting their work in a visually stunning setting, such as the Palacete Gomes Freire. In the inaugural year back in 2021, despite the challenges of the COVID pandemic, I curated a selection of design, craft, and art galleries, setting the stage for interior design showcases. Moving forward, I asked artists to create exclusive works specifically for the fair or unveil never-before-seen collections. All pieces featured must be handmade and crafted in Portugal, maintaining the authenticity and integrity of our local artisans’ work.

Can you share any memorable collaborations or installations from previous editions that have left a lasting impact on visitors?

Certainly! One of the most memorable collaborations from last year’s editions was a stunning installation created by Laura Vitorino Rebelo, Martinho Pita, and Vasco Fragoso Mendes. Laura painted the entire entrance room with a breathtaking landscape featuring vibrant pastel colors, which became one of the most photographed spots at the event. Martinho Pita’s outstanding light installation added a magical touch to the ambiance, while Vasco’s unique furniture pieces complemented the space perfectly. Another noteworthy installation was the triptych created by Vanessa Barragao presented by Analora Gallery. Vanessa’s artwork, known for its sustainable and societal approach, left a lasting impact on visitors.

How do you select the participants for the fair, and what criteria do you consider when curating their work?

The selection process for participants at the fair is meticulous and guided by several key criteria. Firstly, I prioritise the quality of their work, ensuring that each artist or artisan showcases exceptional craftsmanship and creativity. Aesthetics play a crucial role as well, as I aim to curate a visually captivating and diverse exhibition. Additionally, I seek out artists who are capable of producing bespoke works not only for individuals but also for projects in the hospitality sector. Recognising the growing demand for unique and customised pieces in hospitality settings, I try to connect artists with opportunities to collaborate on projects for hotels, restaurants, and other establishments.

In this year’s edition, I’ve particularly encouraged collaborations between artists to stimulate their creativity and foster new artistic expressions. By nurturing collaborative endeavours, we can push the boundaries of artistic innovation and create truly memorable experiences for visitors.

How has LISBON by DESIGN fostered connections within the arts and design community in Portugal, and what impact has it had on the local creative scene?

I believe that LISBON by DESIGN has become an anticipated annual event within the Portuguese creative community. It serves as a platform that showcases the immense talent and craftsmanship present in Portugal, demonstrating to local artists that their work can resonate on an international level. LISBON by DESIGN played a pivotal role in launching the Lisbon Design Week last year (in collaboration with From My City.) This initiative has created a vibrant atmosphere in the city, centred around craft and design during the fair.

Additionally, LISBON by DESIGN is committed to spearheading similar projects in the future to further dynamise the local creative community. Through initiatives like these, LISBON by DESIGN aims to foster connections within the artistic community in Lisbon, facilitate collaboration, and provide networking opportunities for local artists and designers.

What future initiatives or expansions do you envision for LISBON by DESIGN, and how do you plan to continue supporting the arts and design community in Portugal?

Looking ahead, LISBON by DESIGN is committed to further expanding its initiatives to support and promote the craft and design community in Portugal. We envision continuing our efforts to organise private studio visits and other projects aimed at revitalising the Portuguese craft and design scene, both domestically and internationally. Through our continued dedication to supporting the craft and design community, LISBON by DESIGN aims to contribute to the ongoing growth and success of Portuguese craftsmanship and creativity on a global scale.
