The Rebirth of Snob, Lisbon’s Timeless Bar

The Rebirth of Snob, Lisbon’s Timeless Bar

Behind the Green Door

Tucked away behind a mysterious green door at 178 Rua de O Século, Snob, one of Lisbon’s most iconic bars, is stepping back into the spotlight. With over 60 years of history, Snob’s careful renovation preserves its soul, making it not only a destination for nostalgia but a home for new stories.

Snob was never just a bar. It was—and still is—a refuge for intellectuals, artists, and anyone who values the art of a good conversation. After decades of shaping Lisbon’s social and cultural fabric, Snob is back, blending its past and present to offer a reimagined experience.

Since its opening on November 16, 1964, Snob has been a refuge for Lisbon’s cultural elitejournalists, politicians, and creatives—where ideas that shaped an era were born. The iconic Table 10 became an informal newsroom, hosting names like José Saramago, José Cardoso Pires, and João César Monteiro, while musicians like Carlos do Carmo left their mark.

With its English-pub charm—brass details, dark green leather, and wooden tables—Snob offered an intimate, living-room atmosphere. At its heart were Albino Oliveira, who welcomed guests like family, and D. Maria, whose soulful dishes made it feel like home.

Preserving the Legacy

Snob’s latest chapter respects what makes it irreplaceable: authenticity. The recent renovation is not a reinvention but a restoration - a timeless escape untouched by trends: original brass fixtures, wooden displays, and the iconic dark green leather seats remain, while tables have been reinforced to stand the test of time.

Now, under the care of the São Bento Group, led by Miguel Garcia, Snob reopens with its legacy intact, ready to welcome a new generation of “snobs.”

A Menu That Tells a Story

Snob’s menu honours its legacy with signature dishes like the Bife à Snob and the beloved Mousse de Manga—a sweet finale worth savouring. At the bar, head barman Manel Frazão curates a mix of speakeasy classics and modern favourites, each drink crafted to leave a lasting impression, one sip at a time.

So, ring the bell and step through the green door. Inside, you’ll find more than just a bar—you’ll find a piece of Lisbon’s soul.
