A modern take on

Mallorcan architecture

Hi design junkies,

What do you think when you hear about Mallorca? Crystal clear blue waters, stunning landscapes and pleasant Mediterranean climates, right? All of that is amazing, for sure, but do you know what else is? Mallorcan architecture!

Bloomint, a Barcelona-based interior design studio, designed THE perfect example of what Mallorcan architecture and charm is all about: Can Roig.

This 265m2 house is a true Mediterranean gem, where traditional architectural elements and materials blend together in a modern way.

Can Roig, located in a village near Cas Concos, a few kilometres away from a coastline full of turquoise blue water beaches, has the traditional layout of a Mallorcan house.

The entrance, a transition space between the house’s interior and exterior, is a sort of interior Mallorcan patio. The floor material, uneven cuts of Santanyí stone, and the ceiling, made of "perllongues" beams and Santanyí stone, are characteristic designs of Mallorcan mansions.

The ground floor is articulated by a central built-in shelf that connects the fireplace, the pantry, the dining room, and the kitchen. This shelf also serves as a place to show case Mallorcan art and crafts, all enhanced by built-in spot lights.

The shelf covering, made with mortar and local natural clays, gives the shelf that beige colour, which allows it to blend in with the tonalities of the environment.

The kitchen faces the living room, with only low storage, it creates a light and luminous space that is fully open to the living-dining room.

The kitchen furniture was made -to- measure by a local carpenter and the countertop was made with Binissalem stone, from a quarry north of the island.

The location of the kitchen and the living-dining room next to the pool allows them to always have unobstructed views, creating continuity with the outdoor porch.

The house’s first floor and exterior design keep the same aesthetic as the interior design. They also were made to fit and blend in with their surrounding environment with the earthy tones colour palette, and the materials used being mostly all natural and local.

Bloomint’s initial objective to connect Can Roig with Mallorca’s natural elements present inland, was definitely achieved.
