Boulevard 6: Inside Ortega Diago's Mid-Century Modernist Apartment in San Sebastián

A 90 sqm renovation on the Basque capital's most iconic street

In San Sebastián, where the Belle Époque architecture of the Basque coast still defines the rhythm of the streets, Ortega Diago has completed a renovation that refuses the current tide of neutral, organic interiors.

Located inside a 1900s building on the city's iconic Boulevard, Boulevard 6 is a 90 sqm apartment and a quietly confident manifesto for Mid-Century Modernism.

The project is the work of Gonzalo Sánchez Ortega and Armando Diago — a San Sebastián studio awarded the prestigious Peña Ganchegui Prize in 2023 for emerging Basque architecture.

Light, Shadow and a Longitudinal Plan

The apartment's narrow, elongated footprint becomes its primary design tool. The living area opens towards the leafy Boulevard, while the bedrooms retreat to a quiet pedestrian street at the rear. Natural light filters through the length of the residence, creating a deliberate sequence of light and shadow that recalls the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century construction.

High ceilings, recovered through a complex structural rehabilitation, amplify the sense of scale. The absence of unnecessary partitions does the rest.

Stainless Steel Meets Ebonised Pine

The material palette is where the project makes its most confident statement. The kitchen, clad entirely in stainless steel, acts as a reflective surface — capturing exterior light and drawing the green of the Boulevard into the heart of the home.

Its counterpoint is the noble pine flooring, treated to a near-black tint that adds depth to every room and evokes the resonant quality of historic interiors. Cold against warm, reflective against matte — the apartment achieves a sober, timeless aesthetic through contrast rather than colour.

Design Classics as Architecture

Mid-Century Modernism is having a cultural moment, but Boulevard 6 resists treating iconic furniture as decoration.

A dining table and chairs by Johannes Andersen for CFC Silkeborg anchor the kitchen and dining area. Marcel Breuer's Wassily armchair for Knoll International is positioned precisely by the window. Eileen Gray's side table for Cassina and technical lighting by Artemide (Tolomeo) and Tadaima complete a selection where every piece earns its place.

Nothing here is superfluous. Everything structures the space.
