Van Stapele’s Metamorphosis From a Tiny Shop To a Grander Location
Growing Beyond
Its Humble Beginnings
—
Amsterdam’s treasured cookie hotspot, Van Stapeles, has inspired Studio Modijefsky to design a new grander location. A space where sweet-toothed individuals can immerse themselves in the essence of this irresistible delicacy. Despite the recipe’s years-long secret, Van Staples encourages the transparency of their baking process by displaying the cookies’ journey from the oven to the customers’ hands.
Here it’s all about the experience, so it’s no surprise that the atmosphere gives a reminiscent feel of the original shop, where proximity to the baking process is at the heart of the design.
As you step inside, your eyes are drawn to the large glass wall that reveals the baking area. Marble tables, where cookies are expertly rolled, contrast beautifully against an antique brass oven. Once the cookies have been masterfully baked, they make their way onto a tray that spans the entire store width. The conveyor belt paves the path to the next destination, the long white-beige marble counter. At this moment customers are handed over their warm cookie to indulge in.
The space invites a gentle harmony of brown shades and cream-white colours to highlight the star of the show: brown chocolate cookies with a heart of white chocolate. An effortlessness of tradition with a modern twist is reflected through warm wood materials, antique brass, and refined detailings.
The treats don’t end there; on the right side of the store lies a special delight for children. A grab cabinet is displayed where a coin is received upon entry. Once the coin is inserted, a golden cookie dough ball flows along a track that winds through a miniature model of the old shop building. When reaching the end of the track a surprise appears, creating an unforgettable adventure for each child.
Queues have become a norm for Van Stapele and to enhance the waiting experience, Studio Modijefsky curated attention-grabbing details. Above, the flat ceiling is transformed by stepped ceiling cassettes with antique mirrors and softly glowing lights. Three elegant chandeliers further illuminate the spacious counter area. The floor features custom-made terrazzo tiles inspired by nearby Dam Square and Rokin. These tiles, crafted from a blend of rich brown marbles in cream-colored cement, create a fan pattern that resonates with the local aesthetic.
Reflecting Vera van Stapele's dedication to achieving the perfect balance of crunchy and chewy, this setting is adorned with captivating details that harmoniously blend imagination and ingenuity.
