Celebrating 50 Years of Cinematic Brilliance: Film Fest Gent Unveils a Bold New Look!
Turning 50 never
looked better

People have said that turning 50 is one of the most important birthdays in your entire life and we believe so too. With age comes change, and Film Fest Gent made sure to not miss that detail with their brand-new look made by creative studio Mutant.
The new look was officially unveiled this October at the opening of the 50th edition of the Film Festival: A brand new identity with a bold logo, striking colors, dynamic animation, and a sprightly icon. Turning fifty never looked this good.
The new wordmark, set in Displaay’s Azeret Mono, references both the inherent rotation associated with “moving images” and the circular shape of Joseph Plateau’s Phenakistoscope: A nod to the film reels of yesteryear and homage to the rich heritage of Belgium ’s biggest film festival.
Both the still and animated versions of the contemporary design set an expressively dynamic tone, illustrating the jubilant atmosphere of a true festival.
Before receiving any material from the competing movies, 3 main colorways were defined for initial communication. The palette was then extended by sampling from the richness of all movie poster imagery once contesters were announced.
This radiant use of color can be felt throughout the communication and resonates in a world far beyond dark cinema halls.
A unique thematic pattern, which will change year after year, was added to increase the branding’s dynamic look and feel. The horse of Film Fest Gent is a familiar icon closely associated with film history and the history of Ghent.
The Joseph Plateau Honorary Award is presented to distinguished guests of Film Fest Gent whose achievements have earned them a special place in the history of international filmmaking.
The award itself is a replica of Professor Joseph Plateau’s Phenakistoscope, which became the basic principle behind the idea of “moving images”.
This iconic award received a design upgrade, and for the other film prizes, Mutant™ paired with German illustrator Benedikt Luft to create a whole new interpretation of the horse.
The festival’s icon now bravely jumps forward towards the future of film and is used to accompany the word mark as a brand asset where relevant.
