The AMAR Welcome Center: Babayants Architects’ Vision on Lake Baikal

A Seamless Blend of Nature and Design on Lake Baikal

Nestled on the shores of Lake Baikal, one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders, the AMAR Cultural and Educational Complex represents an innovative fusion of nature and design.

Located in Buryatia, a region rich in Siberian heritage, this visionary space invites visitors to experience the extraordinary natural and spiritual beauty of the area. At its heart lies the Welcome Centre, designed by Babayants Architects, a space that goes beyond architecture to offer an immersive experience within this sacred landscape.

Design Inspired by Nature

When Babayants Architects first visited Lake Baikal, they were enveloped by its strength and serenity. "It was a long-held dream that came true at just the right moment," say founders Lia and Artur Babayants.

Drawing inspiration from the local landscape, the design reflects the symbolic archetypes of Baikal, the towering trees, golden dunes, and the ever-changing surface of the lake, inviting visitors to feel nature, not just observe it.

The central theme is the tree, a powerful symbol in the region, whose form and growth rings inspired the layout of the space. The design anchors itself in the verticality and strength of trees, representing renewal and connection.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a reception area formed from smooth, layered volumes, with a water feature at the centre that symbolises the sacred lake.

A tree grows from this water, creating a striking focal point, further enhanced by glass benches that evoke the frozen surface of Baikal in winter.

Materiality and Sensory Experience

The architects’ choice of materials reinforces the connection between interior and exterior. The warm sandy tones of the walls, cool natural stone flooring, and reflective glass combine to create a harmonious space that mirrors the natural environment.

The sculptural quality of the space, smooth lines, soft curves, and balanced proportions, imbues the environment with a sense of calm, encouraging contemplation and connection to the surrounding landscape.

Furniture as a Reflection of Nature

Every piece of furniture in the Welcome Centre has been designed to complement the natural beauty of the region. Modular sofas and armchairs from the Citalá collection feature soft folds and rounded forms, reflecting the fluidity of the lake.

The Wouri coffee tables, with their floating metal bases, symbolise ice, while colourful objects on the tables evoke droplets frozen in motion. These pieces contribute to a relaxed aesthetic and deepen the sensory experience.

The AMAR Welcome Centre is not just a building; it’s an experience that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape of Baikal. The design encourages reflection, dialogue with nature, and a profound sense of belonging, creating a space where architecture and the natural world blend seamlessly.
