Kubikgallery Opens a New Space in Lisbon's Beato District
Kubikgallery lands in Lisbon to engage
new audiences and showcase contemporary art

In a strategic move to expand its reach, Kubikgallery has inaugurated a new space in Lisbon's Beato district, a vibrant area in the city’s East End. Building on the success of its Porto project launched in 2010 and its São Paulo outpost since 2015, Kubikgallery aims to connect with new audiences in the Portuguese capital.
João Azinheiro, founder and creative director of the gallery, explains: “We want to reach new audiences, be physically closer to the cultural events happening in the capital, with a strong focus on valuing contemporary art and promoting artists from various fields of visual arts.”.
The new chapter for Kubikgallery began on October 3rd with the group exhibition “Ação à Distância” (Action at a Distance), curated by Bernardo José de Souza and Luisa Duarte. The exhibition features a diverse selection of artists, including Alexandre Canonico, Armando Andrade Tudela, Artur Lescher, Dan Coopey, Daniel Frota de Abreu, Emmanuel Nassar, Flávia Vieira, Gonçalo Sena, Leda Catunda, Manoela Medeiros, Paloma Polo, Pedro Tudela, Pedro Vaz, Salomé Lamas, Sara Ramo, and Vera Mota.
Kubikgallery aims to promote the exposure and circulation of its artists' work through participation in international art fairs and collaborations with other cultural and artistic entities. This approach fosters a dynamic and vibrant program, both in Portugal and abroad. Since 2015, the gallery has maintained close ties with Brazil, facilitating the exchange of artists and creating opportunities to enrich their artistic journeys.
“Ação à Distância” (Action at a Distance) explores the ambiguous relationship between humans and what is conventionally termed "nature" in Western discourse. Whether more or less artificial, mediated through intellect or the senses, or idealised to varying degrees, this concept is presented in the exhibition as a crucial element to assess our need for tools to navigate the relationship with what predates human existence.
The assembled works form a pathway showcasing the unique poetic universe of 14 different artists, each addressing the complex connection with nature in their distinct ways. The exhibition's title metaphorically alludes to our distanced and mediated relationship with nature, shaped by theories, schemes, and projections, whether through technological artifacts, scientific methods, or mythical and symbolic constructions.
“Ação à Distância” (Action at a Distance) will be on display at Kubikgallery in Lisbon until November 30, 2024.
