Lupita Pizzaria Alvalade: A Performance-Led Extension of a Lisbon Favourite
Where architecture transforms workflow into theatre,
and pizza-making into pure design
—
Following the cult success of its intimate Cais do Sodré location, Lupita expands into Alvalade with an architectural vision that feels both familiar and radically elevated. Designed by XXXI.studio, this new chapter pushes the brand’s signature openness further, transforming the daily ritual of pizza-making into an intentional, uninterrupted performance.
No back-of-house illusions. No heavy decor. Just process, precision and the quiet drama of craft visible from street to counter.
A Space Built for Performance and Flow
The architecture begins with the operational heartbeat of Lupita. To meet its high-volume rhythm, the team restructured the layout entirely — shifting pre-production into a neighbouring unit and freeing the main room to operate as a continuous, customer-facing stage.
Stainless-steel counters define the space with clarity. Movement dictates form. Every gesture is part of the choreography. It’s a restaurant shaped not by ornamentation, but by the energy and efficiency of what happens within it.
The Architecture of Transparency
On a street of conventional façades, Lupita Alvalade stands open — a fully visible interior framed like a live set. Instead of signage or visual noise, the production itself becomes the identity. Passersby see the dough being stretched, the heat of the oven, the rhythm of the kitchen. The space communicates honesty, immediacy and intention without a single word.
It is transparency as design, and design as invitation.
Built for Longevity, Designed for Adaptation
In line with XXXI.studio’s practice, the project embraces a low-intervention architecture that prioritises longevity. The identity lives in the elements that can move — the counters, tools, gestures — not in heavy structural statements. This allows the space to evolve, adapt and even shift purpose in the future without compromising its clarity.
It’s sustainability expressed through restraint: minimal construction, maximum lifespan.
A Focused Interior With Quiet Impact
The interior reveals its strength through simplicity: industrial surfaces balanced by soft light, measured proportions and an openness that lets the room breathe. It’s minimal, but never cold — a space where the architecture steps back just enough to let the craft take centre stage.
And while the design is the headline, the experience remains unmistakably Lupita: fast, generous, flavour-driven pizza served with the same energy that defines its Cais do Sodré original. Here, that rhythm is simply amplified by space — an environment built to honour both performance and pleasure.
A Confident Dining Experience
At Lupita, the pace of service becomes part of the atmosphere, and the refined simplicity of the space lets the food speak with clarity. It’s a confident extension that elevates casual dining with intention and ease. And yes — the pizza remains a must-try, unmistakably Lupita and worth returning for.
